A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) Sixth Edition & Resultant Project Management Professional (PMP)® Examination Changes – Dates You Need to Know...

This information bulletin contains important details regarding the forthcoming release of the PMBOK® Guide, Sixth Edition and the review and release timetable.


  • Exposure Draft, (Guide Section): Available for comment, from 8:00 a.m. EDT, 26 June 2016 to 5:00 p.m. EDT, 26 July 2016, (All times relate to East Coast USA).
  •  Draft English Version in PDF: Available in first quarter of 2017.
  •  Published Launch Date: Third quarter of 2017 in English and 10 other languages. Project Management Professional (PMP)® Exam certification updates are expected to occur in Q1 2018 as a result of the PMBOK changes.


What is new?

Process Enhancements: Two-stage Exposure Draft Process

  • Stage 1 – Exposure draft for “The Standard for Project Management”, was available in the Northern Hemisphere spring of 2016, with a full consensus review.  
    • Agile practices incorporated into the PMBOK® Guide Expanded coverage of agile and other adaptive and iterative practices. This will align proven, foundational project management concepts with the evolving state of the profession today.
    • Introductory sections and agile appendix added. Also, Project Management Institute (PMI)® plan to publish a companion practice guide focussed on agile. This should be available tentatively in the third quarter of 2017.  
    • There will also be three introductory sections, for each Key Knowledge Area. These are: Key Concepts, Trends and Emerging Practices and Tailoring Consideration.  
    • More emphasis on Strategic and Business knowledge and the PMI Talent Triangle™
